Student Environmental Effects

When a student is in the classroom, sometimes they aren’t just thinking about what’s on the board. Sometimes their mind is clouded with friendship drama, family events, thoughts about the past, or what is yet to come. For some, it is difficult to focus in a classroom when you were struggling at home. Whether a child is struggling to balance extracurriculars with education or witnessing their parents divorce, anything that happens outside the classroom usually affects them inside the classroom. This can display itself through anger issues, bullying, a lack of focus, and other ways. For situations such as this, many schools have counselors for children to work with or sometimes even just vent to. There is also counseling outside of the classroom through professionals such as therapists or life coaches. If you think you or someone you know could benefit from help with the haul of everyday life, consider giving counseling a try, or read more with the links below!

The End of C*VID, the Beginning of School

As a double-full-time nanny, I help raise children from 2 separate families. Both families have “C*VID babies” or children born during the pandemic. One many of us had to get used to masks a new rules or regulations, these children were born into it. These rules and regulations are all that they know. Now that we are starting to come to an end of an era per se, we are beginning a new one for their generation. If we were to look at a child that started elementary school when the pandemic began, there is a chance that they did not get to experience a normal social life that a child with experiences in school. Looking back, if this child was 5 in 2019, they are now 9 in 2023. So applying to the vast majority of children, ages nine and under is this lack of familiarity with in-school education. Up until now. Their schooling has been provided through online resources, completed in their own home, without a teacher and other children physically present. From an educational standpoint, the comment etiquette of being a student in a school at a desk in a classroom is likely a new topic being introduced to them. Usually, this is introduced in kindergarten or preschool, but some children are now learning it in third grade. This can be a struggle for teachers because starting in third grade in Ohio annual state testing needs to be prepared for, essentially setting back the lesson plans. Teachers, students, and families need to work together during this transitional time to make sure that the child is adjusting well and is prepared for learning class content. Something to think about:

What do you think is the best way to make sure students are transitioning well in the classroom?
Have you noticed any signs that you or someone you know may be more focused on the transition to class than the actual class work?

My way of caring for others displayed in a career is making sure they know how to care for themselves when they leave my classroom. I made this blog to educate parents, students, and educational staff on the behind-the-scenes of k-12 education. I plan to provide information that you can use in your everyday life. Showing you my perspective, a nanny and school staff perspective, of education. I hope you are able to learn something while you are here and maybe even teach me a little something new in return!
